The remains are found on twelve meter tall (39 feet approx.) cliffs extending to the Yucatán Peninsula's east-coast on the Caribbean Sea. It was one of the last settlements created and colonized by the Maya and attained its exquisite prominence during the 13th to 15th centuries. Maya civilization continued to inhabitate Tulum for about seventy years afterwards the Spanish started capturing Mexico, but the Tulum city was deserted by the end of the sixteenth century. It is one of the well-preserved seaside Maya sites, and nowadays a famous site for tourists.
