The Tiananmen square encloses the National Museum of China, the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, and the Great Hall of the People. Mao Zedong ordered the setting up of the People's Republic of China in the Tiananmen Square on 1st October, 1949; the commemoration of this incident is still celebrated there. The size of the square is 765 meters X 282 meters (53.31 acres or 215,730 meter square). Tiananmen Square has strong cultural acceptance as it was the spot of various significant events in the history of China.

Out of China, it is well recognized for the protest and massacre of 1989 that finished with a army clampdown, which is also acknowledged as the June Fourth Massacre or the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
