It is situated mainly within the state of Mato Grosso do Sul of Brazil, but it spans into Mato Grosso and parts of Paraguay and Bolivia. It covers over an area approximated at between 54,000 and 75,000 square miles (140,000 and 195,000 km2). Many subregional ecosystems lies, each with definite ecological, geological, hydrological characteristics; up to twelve of them have been identified. Approximately eighty percent of the floodplains of Pantanal are submerged at the time of the rainy seasons, developing a biologically distinct set of aquatic plants and allowing to support a vast array of species of animal.
