About Coimbatore

Coimbatore, often called Kovai, is a significant city in Tamil Nadu, India. Positioned along the Noyyal River and encircled by the Western Ghats, it stands as Tamil Nadu's second-largest city after Chennai based on population. It ranks as the 16th largest urban area in India, according to the 2011 census. Coimbatore serves as the administrative heart of Coimbatore District and is managed by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, established in 1981.

Historically, the area around Coimbatore was under the Chera dynasty during the Sangam period from the 1st to 4th centuries CE, strategically located at the eastern entrance of the Palakkad Gap, a key trade route. The ancient trade path, Rajakesari Peruvazhi, passed through Coimbatore, linking Muziris to Arikamedu. The Kongu Nadu region, where Coimbatore is located, was taken over by the medieval Cholas in the 10th century CE, followed by the Vijayanagara Empire and the Nayaks. The Nayaks introduced a system dividing the region into multiple Palayams. In the late 18th century, after the defeat of Tipu Sultan in the Anglo-Mysore Wars, the British East India Company annexed Coimbatore into the Madras Presidency in 1799. The region was also significant during the Second Poligar War, particularly for the operations of Dheeran Chinnamalai.

Coimbatore was named the capital of the new district in 1804 and became a municipality in 1866 with Robert Stanes as its chairman. The city experienced a textile industry boom in the early 19th century, earning the nickname "Manchester of South India." Post-independence, Coimbatore's industrial growth accelerated, making it a major exporter of items like jewellery, wet grinders, poultry, and auto components. The city's Coimbatore Wet Grinder and Kovai Cora Cotton are officially recognized Geographical Indications.

Ranked as the best emerging city in India by India Today in 2014, Coimbatore also holds a high place in investment climate and global outsourcing. It's part of the Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT by the Government of India. The city is consistently listed among India's top ten places to live and is recognized as one of the safest cities for women in India, according to a 2015 National Crime Records Bureau report.
