Colorado is the U.S. state with the highest mean elevation. The average elevation for Colorado is approximately 6,800 feet or 2,070 meters above sea level. There are vast areas of plateaus as well as the high Rocky Mountains in Colorado. More than 50 mountains in the state reach 14,000 feet or higher above sea level.
Delaware, the second smallest state in the country, is also the state with the lowest mean elevation, approximately 60 feet above sea level. The largest portion of the state is comprised of very low-lying land, a portion of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The highest point in the state of Delaware is at approximately 448 feet above sea level near Ebright Road on the PA border.
In comparison to the eastern states of the U.S. the western states are far more mountainous. In addition to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, there are other major mountain ranges of the western states including the Sierra Nevada of California, the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington, and the Basin and Range Mountains of Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah. The old Appalachian Mountains of the eastern states are very worn and are now mostly a series of rounded hills of terrain.
There are many places in the region that are very flat, including parts of the Mississippi River floodplain and the Llano Estacado in the panhandle of Texas. But most of the area is covered by rolling prairie that contains many hills, bluffs, and escarpments, as well as numerous river valleys. In some places the land will rise gradually to 5,000 to 7,000 feet and then drop off sharply in a steep cliff that may drop in a few places to near sea level. In a few places the terrain will rise to near 14,000 feet, including a few of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
The Continental Divide is a large drainage boundary that cuts through many of the western states, including the mountain states. It separates areas where water would flow to the Pacific Ocean from those where it would flow to the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico. The Divide runs through the high country of the Rocky Mountains in the western states.
Contour lines on a topographic map are used to show elevation. Contour lines of constant elevation are typically referenced to mean sea level. The space between the lines on a map indicates the slope of the terrain. For example, closely spaced lines indicate steep terrain, whereas widely spaced lines indicate gentle terrain.
