The mighty Himalaya Mountains, where Everest is situated, form the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Because of its extreme height, the snow-capped peak of Mount Everest attracts all sorts of people: explorers, mountaineers, scientists and travelers from all parts of the globe.

Mount Everest is commonly referred to as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma (Qomolangma) in Tibet. It is part of the vast and dramatic Himalayan landscape which was formed millions of years ago. The extreme height of the mountain results in it having extremely low temperatures and powerful winds. Additionally the air is thin at such high altitudes resulting in Mount Everest being one of the most testing places to try and reach the summit for mountaineers around the world.

Where Is Mount Everest Located?

Mount Everest is a mountain located in the Himalayas on the international border between Nepal and China. The mountain is situated in the Mahalangur Himal section of the Himalayas and is surrounded by many of the world’s highest peaks.

The Himalayan mountain system stretches over 2,500 km across Asia and is home to some of the world’s highest peaks. Mount Everest is situated on the international border between Nepal and China on the southern side of the main Himalayan range in Nepal and the northern side in Tibet, China.

Everest can be climbed from two different sides, the southern side from Nepal and the northern side from Tibet (China). The most popular route to climb Everest is the southern side from Nepal.

How High Is Mount Everest?

Everest’s official height is 8,848.86m (or 29,031.69ft) above sea level. Nepal and China announced this jointly in December 2020, following years of detailed surveys by both countries.

Everest’s height is a complex figure to measure. A host of factors including the Earth’s profile, gravity, GPS readings and the depth of snow and ice on the summit must all be taken into account in any measurement.

The current height includes the snow on the summit of the mountain. This highlights the point that even something as seemingly fixed as the height of a mountain is measured by scientists to the very best of their ability.

How Was Mount Everest Formed?

The massive forces that created the Himalayas created Mount Everest as well.

Around 50 to 60 million years ago the Indian tectonic plate started moving northwards into the Eurasian plate. Because continental crust is too thick to sink into the Earth’s mantle easily, the resulting collision between the two tectonic plates has resulted in great compression of the rocks, folding and uplift. Over time this process has built the great Himalayan mountain range.

Everest is not a fixed geological monument, the landscape is still being uplifted by the collision of the two plates, and subject to weathering and erosion. There are frequent earthquakes in the region, and the Himalayas continue to rise by a few cm per year as the Indian Plate is still moving north into the Eurasian Plate.

Rocks near the summit of Everest are a mixture of sediments that were deposited on the sea floor millions of years ago and have since been lifted thousands of metres into the air in one of the most extraordinary geological journeys on Earth.

Why Is Mount Everest Called Everest?

Mount Everest was known by many names before it received the English name Mount Everest, the name of the British Surveyor General of India.

In Tibet, Mount Everest is referred to as Chomolungma or “Goddess Mother of the World”. The Nepalese call the mountain Sagarmatha.

The English name for the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, was given in honor of Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General of India in the 19th century. During the Great Trigonometrical Survey, the British surveyors found that Peak XV was the highest mountain in the world.

All three names – Mount Everest, Sagarmatha and Chomolungma – are today associated with the highest mountain in the world and are associated with different geographic, historic and cultural contexts.

The First Successful Climb of Mount Everest

After many years of unsuccessful attempts to climb the highest mountain in the world, the first successful ascent of Mount Everest took place on 29th May 1953.

New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay reached the summit together via the southeastern ridge from Nepal, in what remains the most famous ascent of the mountain.

Many people since have reached the summit of Everest. The equipment, weather forecasts, communication and even the routes up the mountain are far better than when Hillary and Norgay first attempted to reach the summit. However, climbing to the summit of Everest is still a very dangerous activity.

Among others, the risk of falling ice, crevasses, avalanches, extreme cold, sudden weather changes and high altitude sicknesses threatens the climbers on their way to the top of the world.

What Is the Death Zone on Mount Everest?

Climbing Mount Everest poses many dangers to climbers but the lowest level of available oxygen at high altitude is one of the greatest.

Climbers that ascend above 8,000m (26,247ft) ascend into what is referred to as the ‘death zone’. Here the human body is unable to acclimatize to the high altitude for extended periods and can deteriorate severely.

The atmospheric pressure at high altitude on Mt. Everest, including at the summit, is only one-third of that at sea level, which means that there is only one-third the normal amount of oxygen in the air that climbers breathe at the summit.

To climb to the summit of Mount Everest, many climbers use supplemental oxygen. Even with this assistance and the best of equipment, however, the climber must work to limit his or her exhaustion, exposure, adverse weather, and time at extreme altitude.

Is Mount Everest Really the Tallest Mountain on Earth?

It depends on how one defines the tallest mountain on Earth. For example, the highest mountain above the mean sea level is definitely the Mount Everest – its summit is at 8,848.86m.

There’s actually a much taller mountain than Mount Everest in terms of height from base to summit. That mountain is Mauna Kea, located in Hawaii and the vast majority of the mountain lies beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Mauna Kea is actually over 10,200 meters tall from its base on the floor of the Pacific Ocean to its summit above.

Another famous example of the discrepancy between height and peak is that of Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador. Because the Earth is roughly a sphere that bulges out at the equator, Chimborazo’s summit is actually farther from the center of the Earth than that of Mount Everest, even though the former reaches a height of only 6,268 meters above sea level, as opposed to the 8,848 meters of the latter.

So depending on how you measure a mountain, Everest is the highest above sea level, Mauna Kea is the tallest from base to summit and Chimborazo’s summit is the farthest from Earth’s center.

Why Mount Everest Remains So Important

One of the world’s most famous mountains, Mount Everest is more than a record height. It represents the incredible forces of nature that continue to change the planet and the brave history of human exploration.

For scientists it is a location to study glaciers, geology, plate tectonics and high altitude environments. For mountaineers climbing the mountain to its summit is one of the biggest mountaineering challenges and experiences on earth.

Mount Everest has also had a great amount of cultural significance for many in the Himalayan region. The mountain holds a place in the hearts of the Sherpa people and their vast knowledge and experience with Mount Everest has led to many of the historical milestones that have taken place on the mountain. The term Sherpa is often used mistakenly to describe a mountain guide but in reality it is the name of an ethnic group native to the Himalayan region.

Mount Everest stands at an impressive 8,848.86m or 29,031.69ft above sea level. The ancient mountain is unlike any other on Earth, and with a long history of amazing stories of climbing feats, the mountain is sure to remain in the Earth’s geography and history for long.

Discover the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, its height, location, formation, climbing history, death zone, and fascinating facts about the world’s highest peak.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

{"authors":[46],"author_categories":{"46":"1"},"fallback_author_user":"1","ppma_author_box_select":"","selected_authors":[{"id":46,"display_name":"Ingrid Rebario","is_guest":0,"category_id":"1"}]}
36,73,79,104

46
post-4105","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-geography","category-physical-geography","category-research-analysis","category-science

Highest Mountain in the World – Mount Everest Height &
